Green Halloween

Halloween is fast approaching, so why not keep it green and keep it cheap?   Give the ghouls and ghosts an energy saving, healthy treat by:

Making your own sweets
Grape lollies – take a bunch of loose grapes, rinse them (dip them in sugar, if you must) and put them in the freezer for an hour or so.
Choc fruits – dip strawberries, raspberries and satsuma segments in melted chocolate and set in the fridge.

Ensuring you have no-waste pumpkins
Separate the flesh and seeds as you go and use the flesh to make a warming winter soup or pumpkin pie.
The pumpkin seeds can either be roasted or eaten raw as a light snack. -After Halloween, put your hollowed out pumpkin lanterns on the compost heap so they can be later used to fertilize your garden.

Creating your own costumes
Collect old rags, rip them up into strips, dye them black if desired and pin onto conventional clothes.
Make witches/wizards dresses and capes out of black bin liners
Make monster masks from papier-mâché.
Make scary ‘hands’ by padding out latex gloves.
Use old pillowcases to collect ‘treats’ – dye it with the rags or decorate with felt-tips.

Creating a Gloomy Glow
Switch off the lights and fill the house with candles.
Torches – when out and about use ones with rechargeable batteries or the wind-up versions.

Car Sharing
Share the fuel, hassle and expense by all bundling into one car on way to your trick or treat venue.

Recycling
Take a bin liner with you to collect up all the ‘treat’ wrappers.  Recycle what you can on your return.

Closing Doors
When Trick or Treaters appear, close the front door behind you to conserve energy

More Climate Swooping

Spurred on by the recent success of the Great Climate swoopers?  Then next stop Copenhagen…

From 7th to 18th December, a climate summit will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark.  This event is billed as the ‘largest ever to be held’ and ‘our last best hope’.  Frustrated by the lack of progress Plane Stupid and their cohorts intend to make an appearance and their feelings known!

The intention is to take over the summit on December 16th and have their say, transforming the conference into a ‘Peoples Summit for Climate Justice’.

Since talks began 15 years ago there has been no evidence of a reduction in greenhouse gasses and emissions continue to steadily rise.  So more of the same type of promises regurgitating out of Copenhagen simply aren’t going to have any credence – seen and heard it all before and more to the point, they just don’t work!

Environmentalists believe alternative changes should be made, such as:

• No fossil fuels
• Community control of resources
• relocalising food production
• reducing over consumption
• recognising and dealing with ecological and climate debt
• respecting indigenous and forest peoples’ rights

Why are these alternatives so impossible for the summit to consider, when they appear so potentially achievable? It’s time to change the system not the climate!

The Great Climate Swoop

Further to the posting on 24th September 2009, we can report that the Great Climate Swoop protest at Ratcliffe went ahead on 19th October as planned and has been hailed as a ‘massive success’!

The Ratcliffe coal-fired power station in Nottinghamshire was the target for the environmental activists.  The protesters gathered at various points on Saturday morning, broke through a perimeter fence within 5 minutes and swooped into the power plant in separate groups, thus achieving their aim.

About 300 protesters were present and police have confirmed reports that there were 3 people injured and that 50 arrests were made.

Demonstrators who were involved in the The Great Climate Swoop included supporters from; Climate Rush, Plane Stupid and Camp for Action. Their overall mission is to show that coal has no future and to take action, when and where possible, on issues climate change.

Team Green Britain

Team Green Britain is an online organisation which encourages people to join and participate in making Britain greener.

Currently their focus is on the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  They intend to show the world that Britain is winning the war against climate change.

Team Green Britain is supported by EDF Energy, The Eden Project, London 2012 and Global Action Plan.

The general idea is for everyone to get involved, even if it is only in a very small way, for example; being more aware of carbon footprints, switching off lights, appliances etc… and understanding that with a very small, but continual effort, a difference can be made. Then and very importantly, passing this message on to friends, relatives, neighbours and colleagues.  Small steps maybe, but slowly spreading this message will hopefully educate people and social groups, bringing with it a sense of ‘community’ and the joint desire to improve the environment.

This approach may initially appear naïve, but imagine the impact if thousands upon thousands joined in, purely by word of mouth!  Click Here to find out more

The Great Climate Swoop

Climate change activists, such as: Camp for Climate Action, Plane Stupid, Climate Rush, Rising Tide and others have joined forces and as the result of an on-line public vote, have organised a mega pubic get together to close one of the UK’s biggest coal fired power stations: E.ON’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottingham

In the run up to Copenhagen, there is a mounting feeling of tension, which is spilling over into impressive calls for action. Growing numbers of people are feeling that it’s time to take action into their own hands as they become increasingly frustrated not to mention embarrassed by the extreme level of foot dragging going on in the UK over climate change – namely by the government and leading corporations.

The Great Climate Swoop openly recognizes the vital role coal has played in our nation’s past, however now it is time to take responsibility for our future. Burning coal is now the biggest single source of carbon emissions in the UK.

Although Drax is Europe’s biggest coal power station, and the UK’s largest source of carbon emissions, with a nod to the reality TV voting systems, the power station selected by thousands of interested parties for ‘Direct Action’ is Ratcliffe-on-Soar – the UK’s 3rd largest source of carbon emissions, with plans to build a controversial new coal plant at Kingsnorth.

The ‘Great Climate Swoop’ is planned for 17th and 18th October and will operate on the same basis as the G20 camp, which was deemed massively successful due to the fact that the protestors managed to set up camp completely avoiding police surveillance!

Roar on the Shore

Thursday 20th August 2009 saw Bournemouth and Poole attempt a ‘Fantastic Fireworks’ event to break the world record for setting off the largest number of fireworks simultaneously.  At 9.30pm off the coast of Sandbanks 110,000 fireworks were ignited in less than 60 seconds.  The record was indeed broken, but the display proved to be a bitter disappointment for the crowds as they one huge explosion was over in seconds and the beauty and spectacle was completely lost.

To make matters worse it now appears that the environmental effects of the event have been considerably detrimental as hundreds of rockets, comprising of plastic pellets and wooden sticks, continue to wash ashore.

The organisers had implied that the pellets would be made of biodegradable cardboard, but in fact they were plastic.  Conservationists at Hengistbury Head picked up 600 of these pellets in one hour!  At least the ones that wash ashore can be collected and disposed of; unfortunately the others will have floated out to sea posing a risk to marine life.

Plastic waste has always caused a problem on UK beaches as it never completely degrades and research has shown that small marine animals ingest tiny pieces of plastic and these toxins are passed up the food chain.

All of this has to beg the question: ‘was it really worth it?’

Big Green Gathering Cancelled

The Big Green Gathering scheduled for 29th July to 2nd August 2009, has been controversially cancelled this year.  Mendip Council have come under criticism for not supporting the ethos of the event and being obstructive by threatening the organisers with a High Court Injunction to stop the event going ahead.

The festival was borne out of the Green element at Glastonbury and has been going ahead since 1982; it hosts many sections of the environmental movement and in particular promotes the sustainable lifestyle message.  This year had been billed as Britain’s largest and liveliest Green event to date.

Although the event has a reputation for being a, ‘peaceful event with the atmosphere of a village fete,’ its cancellation is due to public safety, crime and disorder issues.  Mendip Council stresses that no injunction was made and that the organisers surrendered their application voluntarily.

The event organisers have faced financial difficulties in the past and there is an argument that left unchecked this may have resulted in them not procuring the right level of services and security for the site.  If this is indeed the case, surely the council would have done better, to help out and support a peaceful festival promoting important green issues, rather than opposing it and making life difficult….

Paddle Power

July 17th saw four firefighters from Poole, Dorset tackle a gruelling 24-hour paddle around Brownsea Island to raise money for brain injury charity Headway.

The challenge is lead by Steve Crooks who got involved with Headway after his son Lee, died from suffering terrible head injuries in a car crash in 2001.

All About Critical Mass

Apparently if all the commuters in England with a journey less than five miles went by bike rather than car or bus, the collective saving would be 44,000 tonnes of CO2! That’s the equivalent of emissions produced by heating nearly 17,000 houses and that’s just in the first week!!

Pedal power is big on the environmental agenda for reducing our carbon emissions, but it is also great for your health and your bank balance. Everybody stands to gain from increased participation in cycling, including local communities and society at large. That’s the motivation behind the Critical Mass movement which is sweeping the world and taking the UK by storm.

Critical Mass is an idea and an event, not an organization. Often described as an ‘unorganised coincidence’ it happens when a lot of cyclists happen to be in the same place at the same time and decide to cycle the same way together for a while. The Critical Mass campaign is designed as a celebration of the alternatives to cars, pollution, accidents and the loss of public spaces and freedoms.

Mass bike rides are taking place regularly up and down the country and around the world and most importantly they are all peaceful, safe and fun. There is even the occasional naked bike ride similar to the one held in Toronto on Sunday.

Critical Mass is not just for bikes – skateboards, roller blades, wheelchairs, pogo sticks – in fact any form of non-motorised, non-polluting transport are all very welcome!

Just in case you need any further incentive to get involved
Cycling for thirty minutes most days, combined with a reduced calorie intake, can achieve a weight loss equivalent to the reduction achieved by three weekly aerobics classes.

Cycling provides cardiovascular exercise without putting excess strain on the musculoskeletal system.

Regular exercise such as cycling is an important safeguard against health problems such as heart disease and cancer.

Unsurprisingly, improvement in cycling rates would have an impact on our purse-strings as well as as on our waistlines. In a study commissioned by Cycling England, it was calculated that a 20 per cent increase in cycling by 2015 would save £107 million in reducing premature deaths, £52 million in lowered NHS costs and £87 million by shrinking absences from work.

Promoting a fun, healthy, sustainable alternative to petrol-dependant transport.

Competition Launched to Bring Down Bus Fares

Campaign for Better Transport has launched a competition to find the most expensive local bus journey in the country. By highlighting expensive routes Campaign for Better Transport hope to shame the Government into bringing down fares by investing more in buses. The person who submits the most expensive journey will win a £50 voucher.

Sarah Matthews, a campaigner in the group, said,

“More people would travel by bus if it were cheaper. Higher bus use would reduce traffic, making it easier for us to get around, and be better for the environment. Affordable buses are also a lifeline for many people, making it possible for them to get to work, the shops, the GP and other services. Through this competition we hope to shame the Government into investing more in buses, to bring down the price of bus fares. Funding could go directly to local councils to upgrade services, but could also go to bus priority measures – like bus lanes – to bring down operating costs.”

To enter the competition, people should visit the Campaign for Better Transport website, www.bettertransport.org.uk or email journey details (distance travelled or time taken or destinations served), and cost, along with their name and your email address to campaigns@bettertransport.org.uk.

The competition closes on 31 July.
