A local Dorset villager has taken increased heavy traffic matters into his own hands, literally.
77 year old local man Tony Fuller from Chideock in Dorset, is single handedly putting a stop to the articulated trucks and lorries that thunder through his village.
Tony and a group of local residents have come together to campaign for a bypass that was rejected back in 1990. The group take stand at a newly placed pedestrian crossing in the village where they take it in turns to press the pedestrian button, halting traffic, so they can walk across the road displaying their banners for “Re-Route large Lorries”.
The protesting button pressing has taken up to 45 minutes causing up to 7 miles of tailbacks. The small inconvenience of delayed traffic is no comparrision to the 24/7 inconvenience that the villagers experience on a daily basis. The huge trucks hammer down the A35 road through Chideock causing noise, pollution and shaking the houses to their foundations.
A major concern of the traffic is for the villagers safety. The pedestrian crossing is a very recent addition to the village and there are no barriers and very little pavement. Tony is calling for the re-instatement of the bypass project and for all lorries over 7.5 tonnes to be re-routed using the A303.
The work Tony and the local residents are doing has come under fire and is met with mixed feelings. The traffic delays and disruption to the flow of traffic has been ongoing and the group have vowed to continue their stand until something is done.
There are many who are against the plans for new roads to be made and further disruption of the countryside but in a case liek this a new road or the re-routing of heavy traffic should be considered to preserve the Dorset villages.

Recycling is being made easier for you and your households every day. The council collect your waste every week with glass, plastic, tins and paper also being taken. And there are the many of you who recycle your clothes, shoes, books and linens.
Now, there is another option to do every bit we can to recycle and re-use products and materials. Dorset Reclaim, who started in 1998, have been tirelessly working to encourage local people to re-use, recycle and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. At Dorset Reclaim they offer a free collection service for most domestic items, and collect anything that helps to make a house into a home, from furniture, and electrical items to carpets and curtains, crockery and cutlery.
Dorset Reclaim have prevented 17,500 tonnes of waste going to landfill by helping to distribute good quality furniture, electrical and household goods to low income families. Items can be collected from the Dorset Reclaim warehouse or delivered for a small fee.
Dorset Reclaim is a registered charity project working throughout Dorset and East Hampshire areas. Buy donating unwanted furniture, household and electrical goods you are not only minimising your carbon footprint, helping the environment but there are many local families who will benefit from your unwanted items.
To help with the project or to donate any items click HEREor check out there depots in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorchester.

A recent report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)has produced numbers and results to show that the land and ocean surface temperatures for 2010 are the warmest on record.
The NOAA have said that, so far, 2010 is the hottest year on record with June 2010 being recorded as the hottest June on record worldwide. But this is not a one off appearance as March, April and May 2010 were also the warmest months on record. These records have now been collated and it is the 304thconsecutive month that a global temperature has been above the 20th century average.
The last month that recorded a below average temperature was February 1985.
There are some non-believers of global warming and who have publicly said that it is a political game or a scape goat for other global issues. They have commented that the second half of 2010 will be cooler and that the evidence of global warming is still cloudy. But are these factually, recorded numbers not proof that there is something warming the earth, making these months warmer than we have previously experienced?
In among the high-rising temperatures registered there have been some regions, however, that did record cooler temperatures. Spain recorded its coolest June temperature since 1997 and a town in Southern China recording is coolest June since recordings started there in 1951.
The cooler temperatures do add to the fuel that there is no such thing as global warming but just that we are having a good ’summer’. But this pattern of heating is worldwide. Arctic ice is known for expanding over the winter months and reducing over the summer, but this June showed that the sea ice was declining faster than in previous June months.
It just goes to show that the planet, according to the numbers, on a whole is warmer.

The book, Sustainable Energy-without the hot air by David JC MacKay has brought an insightful look into how everyone can make efforts to use sustainable energy and energy sources.
To read this intuitive and informative book you can go online and read each section or download pages from the contents table.
Many have endorsed and reviewed the book, from scientists, economists and engineers to environmentalists and politicians. Robert Sansom, EDF Energy commented ’ At last a book that comprehensively reveals the true facts about sustainable energy in a form that is both highly readable and entertaining.’
Peter Ainsworth, MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs mentioned ’ “Sustainable Energy-without the hot air” is engagingly written, packed with useful information and refreshingly factual. Those, like, me of a non-technical bent will find the Technical Chapters at the end daunting ; but we don’t have to read them to get the message.’

12,500 plastic bottle are currently sailing around the world in a bid to beat waste, one bottle at a time!
The sailing catamaran, Plastiki, is made up of 12,500 plastic bottles and a whole heap of other recycled and re-used materials to help bring awareness to everyone about the harmful waste degrading the health of our oceans and planet.
For marine wildlife, fish and mammals it is an ever-increasing worry that the ingestion of plastic or entanglement in plastic and waste is dwindling fish stocks and increasing the loss of life in the worlds seas and oceans.
Plastikiand her crew, are sailing the world in the hopes to reduce the usage of plastic bottles, plastic bags and such like materials while promoting the 4 R’s- Reduce, Reuse, Rethink and Recycle! Currently, Plastiki has been at sea for 2616 hours/109 days, covering 6944 nautical miles. The trip started in San Francisco and they are heading to Sydney, Australia.
The aim is to raise 12,500 pledges to help beat waste by the time Plastiki reaches Sydney, Australia. You too can join in and help beat waste by going to the site and making your pledge. Click HEREto pledge. Just think- every plastic bottle ever made still exists today!

Freedom of speech and freewill was the agenda of the 1,000 plus protesters who marched through the streets of Toronto to protest the gathering of the G20 summit.
The 2010 Toronto summit is the fourth meeting of the G20 talks, where heads of government discuss global, environmental, financial and economical issues. The theme of the Toronto summit was Recovery and New Beginnings, which refers to the state the world is in financially, the recession and ways to tackle the economic financial crisis.
Some reports have shown that the protests were mostly peaceful with not one person being seriously injured. However there are several other reports that have the protester numbers exceeding 5,000 with many getting extremely violent and leading to the arrests of over 500 protesters.
Before marches were due to start, protesters met in a near by park, but were disturbed by the police who searched and handed out warnings. It has been said that the police also raided a university building, rounding up more protesters in, it was said, an effort to suppress any further violence.

There has been a lot of press recently concerning the UK wind farms and the need for more wind turbines in the aim to tackle global warming and to increase the use of green energy.
Harnessing the winds power can and does ganerate a huge amount of useable energy. However, it has now been reported that there could be an overload of energy onto the National Grid if it gets too windy.
Too windy? Surely, this would be a good condition considering how unstable and infrequent the weather can be. To store up lots of wind-generate electricity cant harm us can it? Apparently, according to those at the National grid, too much wind and too much wind-generated electricity is not a good thing.
Owners of wind farms are now going to be awarded a payment to switch off thier turbines if it does become ‘too windy’. This seems all well and good in the grand scheme of helping the country to use more sustainable energy sources but this payment to the wind farm owners is going to come from the tax payers.
The National Grid is constantly working to match the need for electricity with supply and this can often be determined by weather predictions and TV schedules. Plant failures and erratic weather changes are also a factor when the National Grid juggles electricity use across the nation. They feel that the balance between using the wind famrs and deciding to turn them off in adverse weather conditions will prevent the network from being overloaded.
